In addition to our work with youth, we also work with adults from the local refugee community in a Farm Apprenticeship and Empowerment program. They are trained in sustainable growing, proper food handling, sales tracking and more. The farm apprentice crew receives a supplemental stipend and is trained in crucial skills at both the farm and weekly market. Throughout the season, farm apprentices become leaders and revel in the ability to grow culturally appropriate crops while also giving back to others as they help to distribute produce to food insecure families. The adult apprentices report drastic improvements in mental health benefits, community involvement, and healthier eating.
Throughout the process we honor and promote the refugees' agricultural skills while supporting their adjustment and leadership roles in Philadelphia.
Volunteers are crucial to the success of the urban farm. We host regular volunteers from the community as well as outside volunteer groups. Community volunteers regularly to plant, weed, harvest and more. Often, three generations participate as young children work beside elders to plant and harvest.
The Novick Family Urban Farm provides volunteer opportunities to outside organizations. Past organizations include Jefferson Medical School, Returned Peace Corps of Philadelphia, Houwzer Real Estate, Temple Football, and Philadelphia Power Corps. The volunteer experience is very rewarding for groups as they work alongside our youth and community to complete challenging projects that allow the farm to thrive.
